Summer Sustainable Cities: Zürich

This Experiential Global Learning experience may appeal to a wide variety of students interested in various aspects of Sustainable Transportation and City Planning.

All classes will be taught in English and there is no foreign language requirement for students to participate in this course. However, Zürich is predominantly a German-speaking city, so the program may be of interest to students studying German and/or in UConn’s Eurotech program.

Creating sustainable cities is key if we are to effectively confront the current global climate crisis. Sustainable cities are those that have developed effective strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel dependency, urban sprawl, and resource depletion. Sustainable cities are where innovation happens – they serve as incubators for new concepts relating to circular economic and ecological arrangements, waste reduction, and efficient use of resources. Because of their desirability, successful sustainable cities must also confront with issues of equity and affordability and must find ways to be inclusive of people from different social, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
