Cultures & Humanities Exploratory

As a Cultural and Humanities Exploratory major or minor, you can:

  • Develop cross cultural communication skills and competencies through experiential learning.
  • Take courses not offered at UConn in niche areas of interest.
  • Begin or continue the study of a foreign language.
  • Fulfill elective and gen ed credit for your plan of study as you determine your major interests.
  • Study with local students, a group of UConn students led by a faculty member, or students from other American universities and colleges.
  • Participate in an internship for academic credit or learning experientially through projects or extracurriculars.

Faculty-Led Programs:
Summer Chinese Language & Cultural Immersion in Shanghai
Shanghai, China
Students with an interest in Chinese language and culture can dive right in with this intensive language and culture program. East China Normal University will provide hands-on cultural workshops and topics may include but are not limited to calligraphy, Peking opera, and Kung-fu. Students will have hands-on experience with the beautiful Suzhou and Hangzhou, learning about China’s silk and tea culture.

Summer in Ghana
Accra, Ghana
Students will be provided with an introductory view of West African Culture, while having the opportunity to visit with and learn from companies in Ghana, seeing their view of success and progress.

Summer in Toulouse
Toulouse, France
This program offers a four-week full-immersion where students earn 6-7 UConn credits, learn about French history and culture, enjoy a lively and modern city with a rich cultural heritage, meet friendly people and participate in daily activities with new French and international friends.

Summer Music in Strasbourg
Strasbourg, France
A unique program combining music history and performance with visits to historic sites connected to the music being studied. Situated on the Rhine River on the eastern border of France in the Alsace-Lorraine region, Strasbourg is within a few hours’ travel of Mainz, Mannheim, and Heidelberg (Germany); Basel (Switzerland); and a former concentration camp at Natzweiler-Struthof (France). From their home base at the Château de Pourtalès, students take day excursions to these locations, investigate the historical context of pieces of music with connections to the various sites, prepare and perform them in an intensive rehearsal process, and receive coaching and lectures by professors of music at conservatories and universities in the area. Winter in Costa Rica
Heredia, Costa Rica
This 3-week program provides an immersive cultural experience in Costa Rica where students will travel to see the socioeconomic differences in the mountain and beach regions while connecting closely with locals. The Human Rights and Migration course offers different options for credit to best suit individual plans of study and the Spanish course has levels for students just beginning the language or diving deeper as a native speaker.

Cardiff, Wales, UK
Students can take a variety of courses within art, History, Literature, and languages at this comprehensive university. Teaching methods include formal lectures and small group seminars to create an interactive study experience. Courses will require independent, self-directed study. 

National Taiwan University
Taipei, Taiwan
A comprehensive university with approximately 800 courses taught in English open to exchange students. No matter what subject a student is interested in, there is likely to be a significant number of high-quality courses and programs to choose from. The University values students developing their potential alongside some of Taiwan’s best students and faculty in an exciting and supportive environment. 

University of Granada
Granada, Spain
This exciting program will take you into the heart of Granada and immerse you in its culture, language and landscape. Together with fellow UConn students and students from around the world, you will take courses at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas, which is part of the University of Granada. Located only minutes from the historic city center, the “Centro” offers students from around the world the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and culture.

AIFS Study Abroad in Salzburg
Salzburg, Austria
This short-term program allows students to begin or continue learning German or to take an additional 1 or 2 courses in English. Choose from Folk Art, Austrian Culture, and Music Comprehension while exploring Salzburg, Munich, Vienna and the Austrian Alps.

Charles University: East & Central European Studies in Prague
Prague, Czech Republic
One of Europe’s most beautiful and historic cities, the East and Central European Studies (ECES) Program is ideally suited for students who are interested in East and Central European Studies, or in any particular specialization or discipline related to Czech studies, including the history and culture of Prague. Academics include Art & Culture, History, Literature, and other social science courses.

Take courses at a comprehensive university boasting extensive offerings in Visual, Performing Arts, and Design subjects in addition to International Studies and foreign languages.

KEI in Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok, Thailand
This semester-length program offers a variety of academic subjects including Animation Production, English Studies, Arts & Humanities, as well as Thai and other foreign languages. Outside of the classroom students will enjoy cultural activities and excursions.

Tel Aviv University
Tel Aviv, Israel
Tel Aviv University’s undergraduate study-abroad program allows students to learn Hebrew and absorb the fascinating land and culture of the people of Israel while taking extraordinary courses in English.  The program offers a rich variety of exciting courses in the fields of International Relations, Social Sciences, Arts, Environmental Studies, History, Religion, Business, and many more.
