As a Social & Behavioral Science Exploratory major or minor, you can:

  • Develop cross cultural communication skills and competencies through experiential learning.
  • Take courses not offered at UConn in niche areas of interest.
  • Fulfill elective and gen ed credit for your plan of study as you determine your major interests.
  • Study with local students, a group of UConn students led by a faculty member, or students from other American universities and colleges.
  • Participate in an internship for academic credit or learning experientially through projects or extracurriculars.

Short-Term Faculty-Led Programs:
Collective Action for Social & Migrant Justice in the Borderlands
Tucson, AZ & Mexico
Collective Action for Social and Migrant Justice in the Borderlands directly engages with organizations that address human rights concerns at the US/Mexico border through collective action. Activities, readings and lectures will guide students to discover why and how people have initiated community work on both sides of the border, what interdependent policies have been pursued by these groups, and how migrants and refugees have been considered and assisted by government and nongovernmental organizations.

Summer Interdisciplinary Ethnography Field School in Mauritius
Mauritius, Africa
This program involves students in interdisciplinary research that combines laboratory and field methods, engages them in challenging and diverse learning environments, exposes them to global cultural diversity, and provides opportunities for immersive and experiential learning. The course offered is interdisciplinary and coursework is related to Cultural Anthropology, Social Psychology, Cognitive Science, Religious Studies, and Area Studies (Africa and Indian Ocean). 

Summer Psychology in Florence
Florence, Italy
Students will build relationships with UConn students while studying Multicultural Psychology in the famous Renaissance city of Florence. The course fulfills the Gen Ed Content Area 4, Diversity and Multiculturalism requirement.

Tuition-Based Programs:

Sogang University
Seoul, South Korea
Students can take courses across all majors with an exception to courses that are specifically restricted to exchange students in a city that combines the historical with modern society. The exchange features a buddy program which pairs an exchange student with a Korean student to help adapt to life at Sogang and promote cultural exchange. Courses are offered in the social and natural sciences and allow students to immerse themselves in the culture of South Korea through a variety of different subject areas, as well as through local travel to historical sites, restaurants, outdoor locations and with on campus extracurriculars. 

The Umbra Institute
Perugia, Italy
Students will benefit from courses that feature project-based learning through community engagement and service learning in a variety of subjects. Umbra has a strong community of students from the US and faculty and staff from around the globe dedicated to student development and cultural learning in this small authentic Italian city.

University College Dublin
Dublin, Ireland
Both Irish and international, UCD is a supportive and stimulating environment in which to spend a period of intellectual and personal development. Academics include the social  and natural sciences in addition to offerings in health sciences, agricultural science and engineering.

Athens, Greece
Students can select from a variety of social science courses that reflect Greek culture and the region on this exciting program in addition to a comprehensive list of other academic subjects. Outside of the classroom, students may enhance their learning with Community Engagement and Service Learning activities as well as cultural activities and excursions.

Dunedin, New Zealand
This comprehensive university offers courses in Communication and Media, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as International Studies, Statistics and more.
