Animal Science

As an Animal Science major or minor, you can:

  • Explore a variety of courses that can count towards your major as related courses and electives.
  • Participate in a Veterinary School program.
  • Participate in a wildlife field experience.

Animal Science students should prioritize speaking with their academic advisor about the best semester for them to go abroad. Flexibility regarding what courses Animal Science students may be able to take abroad and in what term they can go may vary depending on their area of interest within the major or their desired career path. Generally, students may be able to take General Education requirements, electives, or related course requirements while they are abroad.

Pre-Vet/Pre-Grad:  Recommended courses in this area of interest that may be available abroad are Molecular Cell Biology, Statistics, Physics, and Animal Science Foreign Study courses. Students with interest in beginning their Veterinary School studies in their senior year can apply for the University of Glasgow FEEPASS program.

Animal Biotechnology: Recommended courses in this area of interest that may be available abroad are Molecular Cell Biology, Statistics, and Animal Science Foreign Study courses.

Food Science: Recommended courses in this area of interest that may be available abroad are Statistics, Molecular Cell Biology, Nutrition Foreign Study courses, and Animal Science Foreign Study courses.

Equine Science: Recommended courses in this area of interest that may be available abroad are Psychology, Business, and Animal Science Foreign Study courses. There are also a limited number of programs abroad where students may be able to continue their work with horses abroad, or participate in equine sports clubs and organizations. Students with interest in participating in one of these programs should contact their Experiential Global Learning Advisor for more information.

Business: Recommended courses in this area of interest that may be available abroad are Statistics, Economics, Marketing, Management, and Animal Science Foreign Study courses.

Production: Recommended courses in this area of interest that may be available abroad are Economics and Animal Science Foreign Study courses.

Animal Science students should keep in mind that courses with laboratory components are typically not available abroad, and will likely have to be taken in residence at UConn. Certain partners abroad have Colleges of Agriculture similar to UConn where students would be able to take their courses.

When planning an experience abroad, be sure to keep in mind your electives, any extra credits you may be able to use to your advantage, as well as current and upcoming terms in your course of study. For students who have a strict course sequence to follow each semester, a summer or winter program might be a good option.
