German Studies majors and minors can go abroad for either one semester or for a year or they participate in a summer program in Germany to earn credits towards their degree. Students will have the opportunity to study German language and culture in an environment where experiential learning enhances progress towards proficiency.

The below programs are recommended based on your academic interests.

Exchange
Please note that students can study at all of the below listed partner universities for either one semester (spring or fall) or for the academic year (fall and spring). Each of the universities has a different academic portfolio, and German language instruction is more prevalent at some institutions than at others.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Located on the border to France, KIT is a good fit for students in Science, Engineering and Technology. Students need to be more advanced in German to study at KIT, although many of the courses are offered in English.

Mannheim School of Music
The Mannheim School of Music is located right next to the University of Mannheim and centers their curriculum on orchestral instruments, keyboard instruments, voice (concert and opera) and conducting (orchestra and choir). Musicology and Music Pedagogy are also part of the university’s portfolio. The school prides itself on individual exchange between professors and students and large-scale events that are being held on a regular basis.

University of Freiburg
Comparable in size to UConn, the University of Freiburg is located in what locals claim to be the sunniest and one of the “greenest,” most environmentally conscious, cities in Germany, right next to the Black Forest, about 1 hour away each from the Swiss and French borders. Students can take classes in many majors and minors and work on their language skills. The university cooperates with the University College of Freiburg whose course offerings are comparable to those at U.S. Liberal Arts Colleges.

University of Heidelberg
The University of Heidelberg is one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1386, and students can study almost any subject, except for Engineering and Business. The town of Heidelberg, with its famous castle, is located on the river Neckar and a great attraction for many visitors. The university cooperates with the International Study Center which allows students to take courses in German language and culture and maybe pick up a new language if they want.

University of Hohenheim
The University of Hohenheim is one of the few campus universities in Germany and, with about 10.000 students, among the smaller institutions participating in the exchange. The campus is located about 30 minutes outside of the city center of Stuttgart, which can be easily reached by public transportation. The university offers three programs: Agricultural Sciences, Business/Economics & Social Sciences as well as Natural Sciences and is therefore a good fit for UConn students with majors in Agriculture and Business.

University of Konstanz
Beautifully located at Lake Konstanz, with the town of Konstanz directly adjacent to the Swiss border, the University of Konstanz is a mid-size university with strong programs in History, Political Science, Economics and Law, among many others. Many of the classes are offered in English, but students are encouraged to take advantage of the German language courses that are offered prior and during the semester.

University of Mannheim
Mannheim is one of the best Business Schools in Germany and offers more study programs to choose from. Exchange students are required to take at least 50% of the coursework in their subject area. The university offers its Summer and Winter Academy in August and January to afford students from abroad an intensive interaction with the German language and culture before the actual start of the semester.

University of Stuttgart
Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Wuerttemberg and home of many Engineering companies in the region. With 26.000 students, the University of Stuttgart is one of the bigger exchange partners in the program and attracts a large number of international students. Engineering and the Natural Sciences are at the forefront at the University of Stuttgart, but exchange students can also choose from a variety of German language and culture courses.

University of Tuebingen
Apart from being a very quaint, lively town, Tuebingen, also located on the river Neckar, has a lot to offer exchange students. The university, founded in 1477, is strong in the Sciences, Business, Human Rights, the Humanities and in language instruction. Students can participate in a pre-semester intensive German language course and continue with German during the semester.

Ulm University
Ulm, an important historical city on the Danube, is an often overlooked, charming location, and Ulm University has a lot in store for exchange students. The overall student number is lower than at most of the other partners in the exchange which makes for a more intimate experience. Main research areas are Life Sciences and Medicine, Material Sciences (Bio, Nano and Energy), Finance, IT, Communications and Quantum Technology.

Bilateral Exchange

University of Mannheim – Business School
The University of Connecticut and the University of Mannheim signed a bilateral agreement to allow more business students to spend one semester or a year in Mannheim and vice versa.
The application process and deadlines for this program are the same as for the regular state-to-state exchange between Baden-Wuerttemberg and Connecticut.

Custom Programs

Summer Eurotech in Germany
This program is offered every other year, right after the end of UConn’s spring semester.
A German faculty member takes students enrolled in the Eurotech or Eurobiz programs to Baden-Wuerttemberg for a 10-day exploratory trip. Students visit partner universities and local companies, get to know German culture and practice the language, while earning 1 UConn credit for active participation and successful completion.

Summer Service Learning in Konstanz
This competitive seven-week summer program allows students to combine language learning with active social engagement. The program kicks off with a one-week intensive German language course and provides a theoretical framework for hands-on work with refugees and asylum seekers. Students earn 4 credits for this program.

Summer University in Stuttgart
The University of Stuttgart hosts a very affordable Summer University, which starts right after the U.S. spring term ends and runs for five weeks.
Each weekday starts with an intensive language courses in beginning or intermediate German.  In the afternoon, classes are taught in English and include subject areas like history, architecture, communication and the arts.
