Maritime Studies
As a Maritime Studies student, you can:
- Explore a variety of courses that can count towards your major or minor as core requirements, related courses, and electives.
- Participate in hands-on learning activities as part of a course, including an internship, or through extracurricular activities.
- Enrich your academic experience by participating in classroom discussions abroad with diverse student populations.
- Select a faculty-led, exchange, affiliated or short-term program option.
- Develop international contacts to benefit your professional career.
When planning an experience abroad, be sure to keep in mind your electives, any extra credits you may be able to use to your advantage, as well as current and upcoming terms in your course of study. For students who have a strict course sequence to follow each semester, a summer or winter program might be a good option.

Summer MAST at Sea: Experiential Learning Aboard SSV Brilliant
Mystic, Connecticut
Faculty-led program seeks to introduce to students and develop their proficiencies in the technical skills commonly used in the Atlantic maritime world and beyond during the modern period. The skills, often the backbone of vessel operations and the functioning of maritime communities and economies, mediated people’s experiences with their maritime environment. This program offers students the unique experience to participate in maritime activities such as steering vessel; setting, striking, and trimming sails, navigation and more while at sea aboard Brilliant. Students will be introduced to and develop proficiencies in the technical skills commonly used in the Atlantic maritime world and beyond during the modern period.
Tuition-Based Program: Tuition-Based Programs charge in-state, New England Regional, and out-of-state UConn tuition rates based on students’ residency. Tuition charges will appear on students’ UConn fee bills, along with other UConn fees as listed on the program’s budget sheet. Students may pay housing through their UConn fee bill or directly to their host university depending on the program.

Cardiff University
Cardiff, Wales
Cardiff University is an ambitious and innovative university with a bold and strategic vision located in the heart of Wale’s capital. Cardiff offers a variety of Earth and Environmental Science courses, several with a focus on marine and maritime environments.
Direct-Bill Programs: Direct-Bill Programs charge students directly for their program costs. Students pay the affiliate program directly for their fees, whereas other UConn fees will appear on students’ UConn fee bills as listed on the program’s budget sheet. This semester long program brings together college students to study with world-renowned professors in a shipboard classroom setting and in countries around the globe. With the ship as your home, you’ll find adventure, community, and life-changing experiences everywhere you go.
Williams-Mystic Maritime Studies Program
Mystic, Connecticut
This semester long program’s curriculum is based on the history, literature, policy and science of the sea. In addition to courses, you will devote two afternoons a week to extracurricular activities at Mystic Seaport in one of the many traditional maritime skills. You will learn the proper ways to climb, set and furl sails and do rigging work aloft, handle whaleboats, and use celestial navigation techniques. The third component of the curriculum are the Field Seminars to the Gulf, the Pacific and the Atlantic. The average class size is 20 students with a 4:1 student to faculty ratio.
Finances are an integral part of the program selection and planning process. Students should research scholarships early to meet application deadlines and request essay feedback from advisors and the Writing Center.
