As a Data Science and Engineering student, you can:

• Participate in summer programs to fulfill core, professional, general education or elective requirements.
• The best type of program for students looking into taking core courses for Data Science and Engineering is exchange programs.
• Consider sophomore year, junior year (particularly fall semester), summer or winter as the best terms to go abroad.

Due to the Data Science and Engineering plan of study having a lot of sequential courses, it is very important to start planning your experience abroad early. Students are advised to not go abroad during their 4^th year due to design course requirement. DSE students planning to study abroad during junior year should be aware of the new prerequisites for senior design and be very careful in planning to meet those prerequisites before the start of their senior year. In particular, students must have earned at least 70 credits total AND at least 24 CSE credits in order to enroll in senior design, please be mindful that some study abroad programs are limited in their CSE offerings.

Experiential Global Learning (EGL) encourages students to talk to their academic advisor to go over what courses to take while abroad before scheduling an appointment with your EGL advisor.

When planning an experience abroad, be sure to keep in mind your electives, any extra credits you may be able to use to your advantage, as well as current and upcoming terms in your course of study.

Summer Internship in London
London, England
This program runs for six weeks during the summer, allowing students to gain both a practical experience while earning academic credit. Students participate in an internship placement where professionalism and a firm commitment are expected. In addition, program participants enroll in classes through AES. The AES office is centrally located in Bloomsbury. On this program, students will undertake an unpaid internship for up to 20 hours a week, alongside a weekly work placement seminar. Students are generally placed with medium to small-sized companies, which typically offer a more hands-on experience. Internships in Information Technology and Computing are available. Students will also take a 3 credit British Life and Culture course. 

Tuition-Based Program: Tuition-Based Programs charge in-state, New England Regional, and out-of-state UConn tuition rates based on students’ residency. Tuition charges will appear on students’ UConn fee bills, along with other UConn fees as listed on the program’s budget sheet. Students may pay housing through their UConn fee bill or directly to their host university depending on the program.

Semester and Academic Year exchanges at an ambitious and innovative university in the capital of Wales. Students will find the School of Computer Science and Informatics offers courses that may fit in the DSE plan of study.

KEI in Bangkok, Thailand – Trimester/Year
Bangkok, Thailand
Through this program students take classes at Mahidol University (MU), the oldest institution of higher learning in Thailand. MU has developed into the most prestigious university in Thailand, internationally recognized for its high-caliber curriculum, research, international collaboration, and professional services. Students can choose from a variety of Computer Engineering and Computer Science related classes at MU.

API Business, Computer Science, and Engineering in Iceland
Reykjavik, Iceland
Through this program students take classes at Reykjavik University (RU), Iceland’s largest private university. There are a number of classes offered in CS for students on this program. Fall semester students will take 4 courses over a 12-week period, followed by a 2-week exam period and a final optional 3-week, 3-credit intensive project-based course. Spring semester students in both the School of Computer Science and Engineering will follow this same pattern. Classes are taught in English and will be taken with Icelandic students as well as fellow international students.

Finances are an integral part of the program selection and planning process. Research scholarships early to meet application deadlines and request feedback on essays from advisors and the Writing Center.
